DC City Council Approves Pay Increases Recommended by Mayor for District Employees

(Washington, DC) Mayor Anthony A. Williams announced today that on October 16 the DC City Council approved four pay resolutions to increase salaries for selected union and non-union employees who were active employees as of September 8, 2001.

Employees in collective bargaining units within Compensation Units 1 and 2 will receive a 4 percent salary increase for Fiscal Year 2001, retroactive to October 8, 2000. Full-time employees will also receive a one-time bonus of $500, and part-time employees will receive a $250 bonus. Certain non-union employees in the Career Service, Excepted Service, Management Supervisory Service, and Legal Service will receive a 4 percent salary increase for Fiscal Year 2001, retroactive to October 8, 2000. Full-time employees will also receive a one-time payment of $1,000, and part-time employees will receive a $500 payment.

The Council also approved the settlement agreement for civilian communications workers in the DC Fire and EMS Department that will bring their pay up to the level of police communications workers, and a 5 percent pay increase for Metropolitan Police Department Captains and Lieutenants in Fiscal Year 2002.

"These wage increases will benefit District employees as well as residents," said Mayor Williams. "As we continue to reward employees for their performance, these increases will also ensure that there is no widening of the gap between the District's represented and non-represented workers."

The labor leadership also agreed to work collaboratively on pay schedule consolidation for union and non-union workers that would be effective in January 2002, as well as longer-term classification and compensation reform that will begin in Fiscal Year 2003.

These pay increases do not apply to employees in collective bargaining units that are not in Compensation Units 1 and 2.

It is expected that the pay adjustments will be made by early November.
