Cafritz Foundation Awards Honor Five of the Best in DC Government (PAGE 1 OF 3)

Five extraordinary Washington, DC government employees, whose performance exemplifies the best in public service, have been selected to receive the second annual Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Awards for Distinguished DC Government Employees. On Monday, September 17, winners and their colleagues and families will be honored at a reception at the World Bank, Preston Auditorium (1818 H Street, NW) at 6:30 pm. Each of the five winners will receive a $7,500 cash award, and a copy of the Cafritz Awards Arts Competition winning artwork by Jamie Sanchez, a student at Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Mayor Anthony Williams will be the keynote speaker and present the awards. Also speaking at the presentation of awards will be Calvin Cafritz, Chairman of the Foundation.

The winners are: Richard Albright, Environmental Specialist, Department of Health; Mildred Brown, Director of Consumer Employment Services, Department of Human Services; Irene Hall, Cafeteria Manager, DC Public Schools (Duke Ellington School of the Arts); Rita Thompson-Joyner, Assistant Director for Lifelong Learning, DC Public Libraries; Thomas Maguire, Machinist, DC Fire & Emergency Medical Services Department. An independent panel of locally and nationally prominent public administrators served on the selection committee.

"This year's honorees personify the best in public service to the District of Columbia. Their endless commitment and hard work is a shining example for all," said Mayor Anthony Williams. "I'm proud to have such dedicated people on my team, who consistently work to make the city a better place for all."
