Applications for the 2004 Atlantic Fellowship Program Are Available

The British Council of the United States is inviting eligible mid-career professionals within the District government to submit applications for the 2004 Atlantic Fellowships in Public Policy. The Atlantic Fellowships is the flagship educational program established by the British government, in 1994 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of D-Day and to acknowledge the generous contribution of the United States to the liberation of Europe. The program provides public policy professionals with unprecedented access to Europe’s leading policy makers and the opportunity to study, travel and conduct research in the United Kingdom for a period of six to ten months. Seventy-one (71) fellowships have been awarded since the program’s inception.

Where possible, Fellows are expected to obtain paid leave. The fellowship is not intended to match Fellows’ US salaries. Allowances include:

  • Travel to and from the UK;
  • Institutional fees;
  • Family stipend;
  • Monthly local travel;
  • Set-up for lodging; and
  • Baggage Allowance.

Additionally, Fellows staying in the UK for longer than six months are entitled to free medical care under the British National Health Service.

Up to ten fellowships will be awarded. Candidates must possess a valid US passport, pass a satisfactory medical examination, and have at least five years of professional work experience. Candidates complete a formal application including a project proposal that demonstrates: their intention to combine research and practical experience, the relevance of their study to US public policy, and the ability to complete meaningful work within the time available in the UK. Completed applications must be submitted to the Center for Workforce Development, on or before Friday, November 21, 2003. Applications received after that date will be returned.
