Active Duty Pay Differential

Information for employees serving in Operation Enduring Freedom

Mayor Anthony Williams has approved a pay differential for District government employees called to active duty while serving in a reserve component of the United States Armed Forces. Under DC Act 15-90, the “Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom Pay Differential Extension Temporary Amendment Act of 2003," effective July 22, 2003, employees who have been or will be called to active duty, or are retained for active duty, as a result of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, are entitled to apply for a pay differential. The pay differential will compensate those employees called to active duty that suffer a loss of income because their basic military pay is less than their District government basic pay.

Individuals eligible for the differential are any full-time permanent, term or TAPER District government employees who serve in a reserve component of the United States Armed Forces and who have been or will be called to active duty as a result of Operation Enduring Freedom. Reserve components include: the Army National Guard of the United States, the Army Reserve, the Naval Reserve, the Marine Corps Reserve, the Air National Guard of the United States, the Air Force Reserve, the Coast Guard Reserve, and the Reserve Corps of the Public Health Service. The estate of any employee that has been killed while on active duty or who is missing in action may also submit an application.

District of Columbia government employees interested in applying for the pay differential should contact their agency's Human Resource Advisor.
